Monthly Mind - Dr. Bas Vriens

I am an associate professor in the Department of Geological Science and Engineering, and my research focuses on the biogeochemistry of metals, i.e., how chemical, geological, hydrological, and biological processes interact to determine the occurrence and behavior of metals in aquatic environments. My group studies metals across diverse systems, including mine waste rock and tailings, municipal wastewater, and in the North American Great Lakes. Most of our work is conducted in collaboration with industry and government partners, and that practical dimension is especially rewarding. 


My academic path began in Chemical Engineering in the Netherlands, then shifted to Earth System Science in Zurich, followed by postdoctoral work in Europe and British Columbia before I joined Queen’s. I changed disciplines several times as I became increasingly drawn to outdoor work in natural environments (rather than in chemical plants) but I’ll admit that wanderlust also played a role: I sought opportunities in places that excited me geographically as much as academically. Between postdocs, I also worked in environmental consulting to learn how science can intersect with business and policy. 


I did not seriously consider academia as a career path until I accepted that one does not need to tackle every challenge alone. In graduate school, especially in interdisciplinary fields like mine, collaboration is essential. Working with peers, undergraduate students, or colleagues at other institutions saves time, reduces frustration, and broadens your expertise. I encourage my students to actively build these relationships to support their research, expand their perspectives, and make the journey more interesting. 


It is encouraging to see that careers in chemical sciences and engineering continue to become increasingly interdisciplinary and fluid. It isn’t always evident during first-year orientation events, but it has become accepted to be opportunistic, try different disciplines, or pursue internships in fields that may not seem directly related. This includes professionals transitioning from science to business or government and back. Some students still worry about choosing the “right” program, about course selections and grades, but curiosity, practical experience, and teamwork skills may matter more over the long term. Taking the time to explore what you enjoy, and what you don’t, is an important investment in both your career and your personal development.
