Q-ACS is excited to feature Dr. Maedeh Ramezani for this month's Monthly Mind Initiative! Thank you for sharing how your journey through academia and industry has shaped your perspective on chemistry, sustainability, and the importance of collaboration and innovation. Thank you, Dr. Ramezani, for generously sharing your experiences and insights!

My Journey in Chemistry: From Academia to Industry

My journey in chemistry has been both challenging and rewarding, shaped by a blend of academic curiosity and practical industrial experience. After earning my Ph.D. in Chemistry, I pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at Queen’s University, where my focus was on innovative green chemistry. This experience not only deepened my knowledge of sustainable methods but also taught me the importance of considering environmental impacts in every aspect of research. It was here that I realized how essential it is for chemists to think beyond traditional laboratory settings and consider the broader implications of their work.

Transitioning from academia to industry was a pivotal moment in my career. While my time at Queen’s provided a solid foundation, working with industrial partners introduced me to a world where the pace was faster and the stakes were higher. These experiences taught me to channel my curiosity into solving real-world problems within defined limits—a skill that has been invaluable in my career.

Joining KPM (Kingston Process Metallurgy) marked the beginning of a new chapter, where I encountered complex concepts in chemistry that extended far beyond the laboratory. Here, I applied my academic knowledge to industrial projects, gaining hands-on experience in product development, process chemistry and scale-up processes. I quickly learned how to collaborate effectively with engineers, manage time and costs, and develop strategies based on industry demands. Working closely with cross-functional teams, I developed a deep understanding of how different disciplines intersect in the chemical industry. This multidisciplinary approach has been central to my work, allowing me to contribute to projects that require both technical expertise and strategic thinking.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned throughout my career is the importance of soft skills and developing a professional mindset. While technical knowledge is crucial, the ability to communicate effectively and manage projects is equally critical in the industry. My experiences have shown me that chemistry is not just about molecules and reactions; it’s about people, collaboration, and innovation. A chemist’s role extends beyond creating new molecules and compounds; it involves creating new environments, ventures, and perspectives.

Today, I find myself at the intersection of research and industry, where I can leverage my background to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application. My journey has been shaped by a desire to make a tangible impact, whether through developing sustainable chemical processes or mentoring the next generation of chemists.

My career in chemistry has been a continuous learning process, driven by a passion for innovation and a commitment to sustainability. As I look to the future, I am excited to continue exploring new frontiers in chemistry, contributing to the advancement of the field and sharing what I’ve learned with others.
